Merlin K. Colegrove, 76 of Walnut, died Saturday morning, March 28, 2015 at his home.

He was born on June 28, 1938 in Girard, Kansas to Francis Merritt Colegrove and Anabele (Gooding) Colegrove. He grew up in Girard and attended Gooding Country School and then graduated from Girard High School in 1956.

He first worked at Pittsburg Tank and Tower and then at a dairy and bottling company owned by his parents, then he worked for the gas company in St. Paul, Kansas. He later worked for Vince and Jim Stevens on their ranch. He then was employed with Crawford County for 26 years and retired as the Road foreman. In earlier years, Mr. Colegrove and his wife owned and operated the bar in Walnut, Kansas and also The Boots and Saddle Restaurant.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, building things, and helping others. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and was known for his story telling and jokes.

Mr. Colegrove was a member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Walnut.

He and Marilyn S. Jacquinot were married on August 22, 1959 at St. Patrick’s in Walnut. She preceded him in death on May 17, 2012.

Survivors include:
One Daughter – Marla Kichler and her husband Jesse Walnut, KS
Four Grandchildren – Megan Kichler, Devin Kichler, Justin Kichler, and Trenton Kichler.
Two Great-Grandchildren – Kasyn Cline, Brantlee Kichler
One Sister – Margaret McDermed Ft. Scott, Kansas
In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by two brothers, Francis Colegrove, and Marvin Colegrove, and one sister, Marilyn Thompson.

Cremation has taken place and the Memorial Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Walnut. Burial will follow in the St. Patrick’s Cemetery. The rosary will be at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, at the church. The family will receive friends following the rosary in the parish hall.

Memorials are suggested for the Colegrove family to help with final expenses. These may be left at or mailed to Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 374, Parsons, KS 67357.
