Enlisted on Aug 19, 1861. Captured June 22nd 1864, Petersburg VA. Held Andersonville, GA. Discharged Jan 8th 1865, expiration of term.

A few years later, Francis joined the 6th U.S. Cavalry, which was recruiting in Philadelphia for service in the West. He was enlisted Aug 3, 1872 by Capt. Whiteside. He is noted in his records as being aged 29 and a printer He was 5ft 6in tall, grey eyes, dark hair, fair complexion. He served in the West, probably mostly in Arizona Territory, until he was discharged at Fort Whipple A.T. June 9, 1877. He is noted on his discharge papers as being Sergeant rank and in character excellent. It would appear he then went back home to Philadelphia.
