Dennis Madden, 85, former assistant attorney general and retired Topeka attorney, died Tuesday at his home, 210 West Thirteenth.

Born in Muncie, Ind., he came to Kansas when seven years old and settled in Marion county. Later, he moved to Chase county where in 1880 he was admitted to the bar. He served one term as county attorney of Chase county.

In 1895 he moved to Emporia where he became associated in the law business with his brother, John Madden, under the firm name of Madden Brothers. Later he was selected district judge, in the fifth judicial district.
He came to Topeka in 1919 to become assistant attorney general under the late Judge Richard J. Hopkins. He later opened a law office in Topeka where he engaged in the general practice of law until he retired several years ago. At one time he was a candidate for judge of the Shawnee county district court.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian church in Emporia and a honorary member of the American Legion of New York.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Cora H. Madden; a daughter, Miss Ellen Madden, of the home, and a brother, Jerry Madden, Topeka.
