Lillian was born the sixth of sixteen children born to John and Isabelle (Taylor) Baker. Lillian grew up in Old Town and attended Old Town High School. After meeting Ernest Kafka while he was stationed at Dow Airfield in Bangor, they were united in marriage on January 10, 1954 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Old Town. Following their marriage they remained in Old Town and Lillian worked as head baker at the University of Maine. They then moved to Dante, SD for a short time before moving to a farm near Luverne, MN. In 1960 they moved to Beaver Creek, MN and in 1969 they moved to Hadley, MN where they ran the Liquor Store until 1971. In 1971 they moved to Slayton, MN. Lillian worked at Campbell’s Soup Company in Worthington and later for the Slayton Hospital in housekeeping. In 2010, they moved to the Golden Horizons Assisted Living in Worthington were they enjoyed the final years of their 59 year marriage. Ernie passed away on April 12, 2013. Lillian passed away at the Sanford Heart Hospital-Hospice at the age of 82. She was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Slayton. Lillian enjoyed spending time with family and friends, painting, doing crafts, fishing, playing cards, and jigsaw puzzles. She also loved “hanging out” with her special young friends Bernadette Boever, Mariah Koch and Amanda Bristow.

Survivors include her five children and their spouses, David and Jill Kafka, Mary Jean and David Evans, Dan and Brenda Kafka, Dean and Cama Kafka, and Betty and Gary Sandhurst, 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 11 siblings and their spouses: Richard and Myrtle Baker, Marion and Victor Carrier, Theresa Algard, Charles and Sue Baker, Mary Blair, Rose and Dick Bishop, Leona Gagnier, Ruth Ann Grindle, Joan Knuti, Joseph and Mary (Mimi) Baker, and David and Gloria Baker, one brother in-law John and Karen Jalonski, three sister in-laws Wanda Kafka and Dorothy Monson, Betty Kafka and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ernie, her grandson, Zach Kafka, two brothers, Patrick and John (Buster) Baker and two sisters, Rita Jalonski and Helen Varney, Nine brothers-in-law: Lawrence (Pop) Adams, Bob Varney, Jim Algard, Carl Gagnier, Larry Grindle, Gerald Blair, John Knuti, Philip Monson, Laverne Kafka, and James Kafka.

Urnbearers are Bernadette Boever, Mariah Koch and Amanda Bristow. Honorary urnbearers will be the Staff and Residents of Golden Horizons in Worthington.

Memorial services will be on March 28, 2015 at St. Ann’s Church in Slayton.
