Frightened Horse Causes Death of Mrs. Roderic Leland
Mrs. Roderic Leland died on Monday, the victim of a fatal accident on Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock, when she was thrown from a horse she was riding.
Mrs. Leland had mounted her horse at the Leland home, East Main street, carrying a milk pail she intended to take to the farm. Frightened, it is believed by the milk can, the horse bolted from in front of the barn and ran onto the street. The animal slipped on the incline to the street and skidded across, falling and throwing the rider against the edge of the curb in front of the residence of George Powers. The unfortunate young woman was picked up and taken to the Sanitarium, where she died from a fractured skull.
Mrs. Leland, who was Miss Cecilia McCarthy, was married to Roderic Leland, son of former County Treasurer Lee H. Leland, only a year ago on January 10th last. She was 27, a graduate of St. Joseph's Hospital Training School, Petersboro, Ontario, in 1935, and entered the employ of the Clifton Springs Sanitarium as a trained nurse in 1937.
Besides her husband, she is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles McCarthy, and a brother Patrick A. McCarthy, of Woodville, Ontario.
Funeral services will be held at St. Felix' Church, Friday morning at 9:30. Burial will be made in Glenwood Cemetery, Geneva.
