Vermont's 12th Infantry was assigned to the rear guard of the Army of the Potomac in the weeks leading up to the Battle of Gettysburg. The 12th was assigned to the rear to prevent supply trains from Confederate Cavalry. Immediately following the battle, the 12th Vermont returned home and mustered out.

Following the war, he was an overseer at Merrimack Mfg Co. until he retired.
