Portia attended Noblesville School and graduated from Edinburgh High School in Indiana. She also attended Oxford College in Ohio and graduated from both Indiana Business College and Butler University in Indianapolis. In 1961 she received her master's degree from Columbia University.

She was in the military during World War II in the 2nd Signal Service Battalion, US Signal Corps (Army) Washington DC. Her knowledge of the war and founding of Camp Atterbury in Johnson County, Indiana was invaluable to the exhibits on the war's 50th anniversary at the Johnson County (Indiana) Museum of History where she volunteered for 10 years. Before working at the county museum she was employed as business librarian at St Joseph University in Philadelphia for many years.

Several years before her death she was named Senior Service Award winner by the Franklin Chamber of Commerce. She had also belonged to the American Legion Post 233 in Edinburgh for more than 50 years.

Portia was a member of the St Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Franklin, Indiana.

Survivors include three nephews: James Durbin Christian of Perry, Georgia, Anthony Booth Durbin of Hawaii and Charles Myers of Kokomo, Indiana; and two nieces: Susan Ann Christina of Indianapolis and Marilyn Myers Mayhill of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She also was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister: Gloria Louise Myers (1909-1981); Grant Wright Christian (1911-1989); Richard Booth Christian (1913-1923) and Paul Durbin Christian II (1918-1977).
