Rebecca Nelle "Betty" Garrett

Betty passed away peacefully on Friday, March 20th, after celebrating her 96th birthday on January 25th. She was born in Brookville, Indiana, the daughter of Fuget Burke and Ruth Haman Foster. She grew up in Guymon, OK, until the age of 14, when the family moved to Wichita, Kansas, where she met her future husband, John Pressley Garrett, at Wichita High School. The family and John moved to Oklahoma City and attended Central High School, graduating in 1936. John and Betty were married on April 16, 1938, while attending Oklahoma City University. John became a CPA and Betty was a bookkeeper for KOMA radio from 1940-42 and she worked for International Harvester as a secretary from 1944-48. During this time her mother practiced law, having been admitted before the Oklahoma Supreme Court in 1929, and her father became one of the first city clerks of Midwest City in the late 1940's.

After the death of her husband John in 1966, Betty attended Blackwood Business College and graduated in January, 1968. With two teenage sons to support, and at the urging of her closest friend, Sheila Elliott, she interviewed for a position at the City Attorney's office and was hired January 16, 1968. Betty had an extraordinary career there, holding many positions including legal secretary, administrative secretary, secretary to the municipal counselor and legal administrative specialist. She retired on January 24, 1998, after 30 years of service and her 80th birthday.

Betty belonged to numerous book clubs and loved to read every night. She belonged to the Methodist Women's Auxiliary and was a volunteer at Presbyterian Hospital, enjoyed playing golf and was a past secretary of the Municipal Employees Credit Union.

She had a passion for her dogs and cats and cared for countless pets her entire life. She once stopped her car in a driving rain at a busy intersection to rescue a stray dog. She kept this abused dog along with her other pets.

Betty is preceded in death by her father (1959), mother (1976), who she often cared for until their deaths, husband John (1966), brother Haman Foster (1986) and wife Florence (2000), and niece Georgeanna Foster (2012).

Betty is survived by her two sons, John Burke Garrett and his wife Debra, William Foster Garrett and his wife Teresa; two grandsons Tony and wife Erika, J.R. O'Dell; two great grandsons, Jordan and Jace; her nephew Alan Burke Foster and wife Fiori of Simpsonville, SC, and daughters Sarah (Peter) and Micah (Saul); nephew, Troy Gilbert Garrett (Lois) of Mays Landing, NJ and niece, Debbie Kauffman of Bensalem, PA.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the loving care that Betty received from the staffs at Autumn Bridge Hospice, Care By Design Residential Care and Prairie Winds. Donations to the Central Oklahoma Humane Society would be appreciated.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. A memorial service will be 1p.m., Thursday, March 26th at Grace United Methodist Church, 6316 N.W. 63rd Street, Oklahoma City.
