Leila Frances Carpenter, age 86, of Aberdeen, died in Harford Memorial Hospital, Havre de Grace, Md., on Aug. 16, 2005.
Born in Laceyville, Pa., she was the daughter and one of 8 children of the late Earl Francis and Myrtle Brotzman Whipple and the wife of the late Clayton Earl Carpenter. She was a member of the Cranberry United Methodist Church in Perryman, Md., and of Skinner Eddy United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir. She was an avid seamstress, a wonderful baker and a great cook. She loved reading, crosswords, and word finds. She was a member of the Essex Moose Lodge where she was the chaplain at one time. She loved spending time with her family and was a friend when she was needed. During World War II, she opened her home to Army men and workers of Glen L. Martin Defense Plant. She also hosted World War II soldiers during the holidays. She was very proud and honored to have raised her youngest granddaughter who grew up to become a nurse.
