Benjamin Gilbert and his fourteen family members were abducted by Indians at their cabin. They were forced thru the wilderness to travel a 200 mile trek to Canada, All of Gilbert's family members survived, except for Benjamin himself. He died after freed on the way back to his home town. Only to become ill and die alongside the St Lawrence river bank. Where he is buried.

He was buried at the foot of an oak tree near the old fort of Coeur du Lac, on the St. Lawrence (river) below Ogdensburg.
