Born at Schoenfeld, Bergthal, South Russia, Peter was the son of John Dyk & Katharina Thiessen.

He immigrated to Canada aboard the SS Quebec on July 20, 1875 and married Margaretha Penner at Heuboden, Manitoba on November 20, 1887. The couple had 13 children.
