Sarah Baker was probably born about 1601 at Southwark, Surrey, England, which is now part of graeter London. She was the daughter of Humphrey Baker. On August 13, 1622, she married Zachariah Symmes at St. Saviour’s Church in Southwark. He was attending Emmanuel College in Cambridge and was looking to become a minister. They had a son who died and a daughter when Zachariah was installed as Curate in Dunstable, Bedfordshire. They had six more children in Dunstable. They left Dunstable and sailed with their children to New England, arriving in September, 1634. They stayed in Boston for a couple of months, then removed to Charlestown, Suffolk County, where Zachariah became the Teaching Elder at the First Church there. They had five more children in Charlestown and Zachariah became the minister of the church. Sarah’s husband died in Charlestown in 1671. Sarah’s will was undated, but proved on December 28, 1676, so she must have died soon before that, in Charlestown. Her place of burial is not known.
