Obituary for Charles R. Hicks
Charles R. Hicks, of West Lafayette died peacefully Tuesday, March 10 at Westminster. He was Professor Emeritus of Statistics and Education at Purdue University.
Professor Hicks was born April 7, 1920 in Syracuse, New York, the only child of Seward and Abby (Teeple) Hicks. He had three degrees from Syracuse University – A.B. in Mathematics and Education in 1942, M.A. in Physics in 1944 and Ph.D. in Statistics and Education in 1953. After teaching at Syracuse, he joined the Purdue faculty in 1953. In 1964 he became head of the Department of Education and later Director of Teacher Education. He received an unexpected honor in 2001 when a former student in Industrial Engineering, Dr. Ed Nichols, gave $1.6 million to Purdue University to establish the Charles R. Hicks Distinguished Professorship in Education.
During World War II, he worked in the Naval Ordinance Division of Eastman Kodak Company as a Quality Control Engineer working on the proximity fuse. He helped found the American Society for Quality Control (ASQC) in 1946.
He is the author of the text, Fundamental Concepts in the Design of Experiments. In 1978 while traveling in the USSR, he discovered his book was being used there. That country did not recognize US copyright laws, but an agreement was made for him to be paid. However, payment was in rubles, and he was not allowed to take the money out of the country. So, he bought many Russian fur hats and brought them home to family and friends.
He was a member of the Lafayette School Corporation Board of School Trustees from 1973 to 1979. He was also a trustee of Judson University in Elgin, Illinois, for over 25 years where he received the 1992 Golden Eagle Award.
In Syracuse, he served as Deacon, Elder, and Sunday School teacher in the South Presbyterian Church. In Lafayette he taught in the First Baptist Church Sunday School for 30 years. In recent years, he was a member Covenant Presbyterian and Faith Presbyterian Church in West Lafayette.
He joined Boy Scout Troop 13 at South Presbyterian Church in 1933. He represented the troop at the National Jamboree in Washington, D.C., in 1937. Members of his Scout troop remained his good friends throughout his life.
His love of the outdoors and the Adirondack Mountains led to the purchase of a camp (along with his father) in Wanakena, New York, in 1952. After moving to Indiana, the family spent summers at “camp” while he taught summer courses at Syracuse University. Later years spent at camp included fishing and hiking with the grandchildren and singing campfire songs from his Boy Scout years on the porch.
In 1965 he helped organize the Harrison Kiwanis Club and served as its first president. He continued this activity through the years, and even after his health started deteriorating, he rarely missed a meeting.
Charles married Ruth F. Muller of Cortland, N.Y. in 1942. He is survived by their three sons: William S. (Charlotte) of Indianapolis, Robert P. (Sarah) of Lafayette and John C. (Tammy) of Swayzee. After Ruth’s death he married Helen M. Scott of Columbus, Ohio in 1983. They spent many happy years at Westminster Village. Helen preceded him in death in May, 2012. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Kelly D. (Ryan) Gerding of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; Stephanie F. (George) Karst of Indianapolis; Brandy J. (Jeremy) Shiflett of Lafayette; Christopher (Tracy) Barrows of Parkersburg, West Virginia; Kevin R. (Cindy) Hicks of Valparaiso; Ryan C. Hicks and Theodore C. Hicks, both of Lafayette. He is survived by 13 great-grandchildren: Jack, Kyle and Nick Gerding; Theodora and Zoe Karst; Emma and Abby Shiflett; Nacodie and Brenna Barrows; and Avery, Carson, Xavier, and Madeleine Hicks.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Westminster Village for their care and kindness. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Westminster Village Foundation, 2741 N. Salisbury St., West Lafayette, IN 47906, or Faith Presbyterian Church, 3318 St. Rd. 26W, West Lafayette, IN 47906, or Judson University Charles R. and Helen S. Hicks Scholarship Fund, 1151 N. State St., Elgin, IL 60123 are appreciated.
Visitation will be from 9 am until the time of funeral service at 10:30 am, Friday, March 13, 2015 at Hippensteel Funeral Home, with Pastor David Horner officiating.
