Joy was born in Wellington, Kansas to Arch and Hazel Fredrickson December 22,1929 and graduated from Wellington High School in 1947.
While attending the University of Oklahoma, she met and married her soul mate William (Bill) Reeves Laney. After living in Hawaii, Houston, and Washington D.C., they moved to Oklahoma City where Bill began a patent law firm. In 1972 they returned to Norman and five years later, built a home ("Wicklow") and moved to the small country community of Pink, Oklahoma where Joy lived until 2003.
One who enjoyed learning throughout her life, Joy graduated from OU with a B.S. in Education in 1986 and a Master of Library Science in 1986. She worked for over 20 years as a professional educator, initially as a first grade teacher and later as a librarian and Assistant Principal. Her final position was at Noble Elementary School where she spent many wonderful years. She was very active in First United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City and McFarlin United Methodist Church in Norman. She also served one term as a member of the Pink town council. Joy was a beloved mother, teacher, and friend to many. Her generosity of spirit, love of life, politics and travel, as well as her laughter and strength of character were an inspiration to all.
Joy is survived by her sister, Jean Jackman of Norman. Her children and their families include, Karen Laney-Cummings of Woodbine, Maryland, daughter Chris Laney-Barnes of Franktown, Colorado, and David Fredrickson Laney of Scottsdale, Arizona, as well as five nieces, two nephews, and six grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be Friday, May 26, 2006, at McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church in Norman with Reverend Cal Brannon and Reverend Phil Fenn officiating. Arrangements handled by Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman, Oklahoma. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to McFarlin Foundation.
