John W Foster enlisted as a Private in the Union Army on October 10, 1863 at Ft. Smith Arkansas. He served in Company B, 4th Arkansas Cavalry with at least four of his brothers-in-law. His enlistment records describe him as 5'8" tall, gray eyes, brown hair, dark complexion; farmer born in Green County Tennessee. He was a paroled prisoner, captured by General Shelby, May 20, 1864.

John and all his brothers-in-law survived the war.
