The first Hunt County man to be killed in Viet Nam war was revealed Tuesday by the Defense Department as 19-year-old PFC Thomas K. King of Commerce, who was killed in action March 25, 1966, in Da Nang in the Republic of Viet Nam.

PFC King, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas H. King of Rt. 2, Commerce "received fragmentary wounds in the head while engaged in action against hostile forces," the Defense Department said.

Services are pending with W.Y. Goff Funeral Home in Commerce. The body is being sent home for services and burial in Memoryland in Greenville.

BORN HERE

PFC King was born August 14, 1946, in Greenville and attended Commerce High School. He entered the military service Sept. 29, 1964 in the Marine Corps and received his training at San Diego, Calif. He went overseas June 3, 1965, and was a member of the Third Division, 9th Marine Corps.

He was a member of the Baptist Church.

COMMERCE – Funeral services for Private First Class Thomas K. King, 19-year-old Marine from Commerce who was killed in action in Da Nang in Viet Nam March 25, still are pending at the W.Y. Goff Funeral Home here.

The funeral home said Wednesday it did not know when the body would arrive here, but that it could be as long as two or three weeks. Interment will be in Memoryland Cemetery in Greenville.

PFC King, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas H. King of Route 2, Commerce and brother Donna Gale King of Commerce, "received fragmentary wounds in the head while engaged in hostile action against the enemy," according to the Defense Department.

He was the first Hunt County man to be killed in action in the war in South Viet Nam.

PFC King was born August 15, 1946, in Greenville and had been a member of the Baptist Church since childhood. He attended Commerce High School and entered the Marine Corps Sept. 29, 1964. He received his Marine training at San Diego, Calif., and was shipped overseas June 3, 1965.

He was a member of the Third Division, 9th Marine Corps.
