Caroline is the daughter of Myndert VanPatten and Hannah Cooper. She moved with her family from New Jersey to Sangamon County, Illinois in 1838 when Caroline was 18. There she married Ezra Cushman Lyman, a local farmer who had arrived in Illinois 5 years earlier from New York. They had 8 children. Son Alvan died at the age of 6; daughter Hannah died at 30.

In 1879 Caroline's brother, John Coop VanPatten, moved to Dayton, Washington and in 1881 Caroline, Ezra and some of their children made the move to the Washington Territory. Daughter Mary and sons John and Alvin stayed in Illinois. Sons Cornelius, Cushman and daughter Laura made the trek west.

It is said they went from Illinois to San Francisco, California by train, keeping house in a boxcar, taking with them their personal belongings, furniture, equipment and livestock. Then they traveled by ship from San Francisco to Portland, Oregon and up the Columbia River to Wallula. From there, they journeyed overland to Walla Walla and by wagons to Dayton, Washington. This was an even more impressive journey knowing Caroline's daughters-in-law were both pregnant at the time.

The family stopped in Dayton to visit the Van Patten family. The original plan was to settle in Palouse County, Washington, but they decided to stay in Dayton. They settled near her brother's family. They applied for and received about 200 acres of homestead land.
