ELMA I. YOUMANS ELEMENTARY TEACHER

Elma I. Youmans, 85, of Springbrook Apartments, died Sunday at her home.

She taught elementary school for six years in Cape Vincent, Chaumont and Clayton, retiring from Cape Vincent Elementary School in 1971.

In 1946, she was named general chairwoman of the annual northern district spring conference of the Parent-Teacher Association.

Mrs. Youmans lived in Cape Vincent for 40 years, moving back to Pulaski in 1975.

She was a member of Park United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women's Group. She was a member of the Pulaski Women's Civic Club and Pulaski Grange 730.

Born Feb. 2, 1912, at Pulaski, a daughter of Clayton and Mae Price Ingersoll, she graduated from Pulaski Academy High School in 1929, and from the Pulaski Teacher's Training Class in 1930. She then attended Oswego Normal School and Plattsburgh State Teachers College.

She married James MacDonald "Donald" Youmans on June 29, 1933, at her home on South Jefferson Street, with Mr. Youmans' mother, the Rev. Marion C. Youmans, officiating. Mr. Youmans was principal of Cape Vincent High School from 1939 to 1968. He died Nov. 9, 1982.

Surviving are three sons, James, Burlingame, Calif., Robert, Ballston Lake, and Terry, Waterloo; a daughter, Barbara J. Youmans, Mexico; a brother, C. Paul Ingersoll, DeWitt; a sister, Norma Holmes, Pulaski; four grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Park United Methodist Church with the Rev. Elizabeth Mawry officiating. Spring burial will be in Pulaski Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Foster-Hax Funeral Home, 52 Park St.

Donations may be made to Park United Methodist Church, or Cape Vincent Federated Methodist Church.
