WINTHROP - Richard Maurice Choate, 84, of Winthrop was peacefully ushered home on March 1, 2015 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Alanna and Donald Cole in Sidney. Richard was born on March 27, 1930, the son of Maurice Stanley and Hilda Mae (Johnson) Choate. Richard graduated from Hallowell High School in 1948. He was an athlete who enjoyed football, baseball and hockey.

He learned carpentry from his father at an early age. As a young adult he experienced different jobs; logging, milk delivery, making special frames for naval ships built by Bath Iron Works, and worked for Maine Central Railroad for over 38 years.

He was also an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, boating, hunting, snowmobiling and camping. When he retired he lived full time on Cobbosseeconte Lake in Winthrop. He spent many years as a member at The First Baptist Church in Hallowell and currently was a member of Dunn's Corner Baptist Church and enjoyed the fellowship of others. Richard was and always will be, the very "Best Daddy" and "Our Very Brave Hero". He loved doing for others.

He was quite the handy man and used his many talents to do anything for someone. He loved his family and could be counted on for his support in anything and everything. He invested his time in their lives. His grandchildren called him "Bumpy". He was a huge fan of theirs and he attended many of their special events along with his video camera that went most places he went to capture many memories we have. He would be the one to drive the boat so fun could be had water skiing; or spend countless hours preparing for a day of snowmobiling or ice fishing; or do all the running around getting things ready for a camping trip, "Bryant Family Reunion" or a week at hunting camp. His home was open to those who needed a place to stay for a while. He had a big heart; one that was touched by so many. Words like "baked beans" on Saturday nights, cribbage, and popcorn to name a few and most of all his famous "pancakes" he would make.

Richard is predeceased by his parents, Maurice S. & Hilda M. Choate; his first wife of 54 years, Arlene Bryant Choate, a sister Charlotte Choate Thulen and her husband Herbert Thulen; one grandchild; and three great grandchildren he has now met in heaven. He is survived by his second wife, "his Sweetheart" of almost 10 years, Lucy Choate; a son Stephen R. Choate and his wife Glenda, a daughter Marjorie C. Frye and her husband Roland, a daughter Alanna C. Cole and her husband Donnie; a very special nephew Gregory Thulen and his wife Elaine; a stepdaughter Susan Alexander, a stepson Brian Alexander;12 grandchildren; three step grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; many nieces & nephews and special friends. He also had a special little girl, his dog, "Cindy".

Spring burial will be in the Hallowell Cemetery. (Central Maine 3/2/2015)
