He attended Huntsville’s Colonial Hills Elementary School and, at age nine, became a member of Phillips Methodist Episcopal Church, participating in the Christian Youth Fellowship.
Kenneth was also a member of the band at Chapman Junior High School, playing the trumpet, and of the Lee High School Class of 1979, the Lee Generals Marching Band, the Stage Band, and Modern Music Masters.
As such, he was part of the group that marched in the New Orleans 1976 Mardi Gras Parade and won the Krewe of Mid-City’s “Greatest Bands in Dixie” Award, which would take the Generals to Washington, D.C. to represent Alabama by marching in President Jimmy Carter’s Inaugural Parade on 20 January 1977 and Alabama Governor Fob James’ Inaugural Parade on 15 January 1979.
While at LHS, Kenneth was also a member of ROTC and the Bike Club.
He later graduated from Alabama State University in Montgomery, following up with graduate work in Chemistry at Alabama A&M University.
At Phillips CME, he became director of the Chancel Choir, participating in the Male Chorus and the Phillips’ Orchestra. On occasion, Kenneth played piano for the Children’s Choir. He served on the Board of Stewards; later he was named Recording Steward.
Kenneth was also a 21-year Boeing employee (Technical Specialist) and a Space Camp counselor.
He was married to Faye Elaine Farley, who gave him a son, Kenneth Ellington Smoot II. Kenneth is survived by his parents; his wife and son; his brother, Charles Tomasco Smoot II; his nephew, Charles Tomasco Smoot III; two uncles, Eric J. R. Ellington and Dr. Frederick Marsh; and an aunt, Rose Marie Rushin.
