Jakob was born in Metlika, Crnomelj Parish, Slovenia on July 5, 1879. At the age of 21 he worked his way on a freight from Italy to New York City. He arrived with little money but was befriended by a Jewish store owner who gave him work. Jakob was able to save money to travel to Pennsylvania where he reached a cousin. He worked as a coal miner for about one year but left for Houghton Michigan sometime in 1901, where he heard working conditions and pay were better in copper mines. There he met and married Margaret Bothe on Apr 2, 1902.
Jakob & Margaret moved to Ely, MN, where first child, Margaret, was born in 1903. He worked in the Pioneer Mine and became an electrician. Jakob became a citizen in 1905.
The family moved to Section Thirty in 1911 where he worked in the Section 30 mine. The couple had 7 more children, Sophia "Sophie", Joseph, Mayme "May", Jack, Emma, Frank and Sylvester. Jakob died in a mine cave-in in 1919 leaving a wife and 8 children who were between the ages of 16 years and 16 months.
