He was elected 1st Lieutenant of Company "C", 1st Battalion (the "Armory" or "Ordnance" battalion), Richmond Local Defense Troops on 28 May 1863. He was killed in action at the Battle of Green's Farm, acting as part of a force defending the northern approach to Richmond from Union Army cavalry troops under Gen. Judson Kilpatrick.
He was first buried at Richmond's Shockoe Hill Cemetery, but was disinterred and moved to Hollywood on 25 November 1899. His grave is unmarked.
