The following obituary was published in a Brethren Church publication entitled The Gospel Messenger, February 24, 1917, on page 127. The current manager of this memorial recognizes a number of errors in the obituary and understands how this may have occurred. For instance, the middle initial and maiden name are incorrect. Because it contains so much valuable information, the obituary remains intact.

"Smithson, Sister Mary I., nee Nickleson, born in Williamson County, Tenn., five miles east of Franklin, Aug. 20, 1838, died in Saint Joe, Texas, Jan. 20, 1917, of pneumonia, aged 78 years, 5 months and 9 days. She was married to William Overton Smithson in 1856, close to Franklin, Tenn. To this union were born two sons and four daughters. Her husband and three daughters preceded her some years ago. They moved from Tennessee to Texas about 1875, then to South Texas and to North Texas in 1889. Sister Smithson united with the Brethren church Sept. 3, 1914. She made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Carmichael. For several years she has been crippled with rheumatism and the last few years almost lost her eyesight. There still survive two sons and one daughter. She was buried by the side of her husband in the Starkey cemetery, about eight miles northwest of Saint Joe, Texas. – Sam Molsbee, Nocona, Texas."
