There are several surviving letters that he wrote from Bourbon County, Kansas to his daughter Levina (Miller) Tucker in Iowa. These letters reveal that his sympathies were for the North. We learn of his death from the letter of his son, Benjamin, who fought for the North. Thomas' widowed wife, Sarah (Ronk) Miller, eventually moved to Carthage/Jasper County, Missouri to be near her son, William H. Miller, and daughter, Hannah (Miller) Lemon.
