Soon after the beginning of the Civil War, Thomas moved with his family from Dade County, Missouri to Fort Scott/Bourbon County, Kansas. His older children moved to Iowa. There are several surviving letters that he wrote from Bourbon County, Kansas to his daughter Levina (Miller) Tucker in Iowa. These letters reveal that his sympathies were for the North. We learn of his death from the letter of his son, Benjamin, who fought for the North. Thomas' widowed wife, Sarah (Ronk) Miller, eventually moved to Carthage/Jasper County, Missouri to be near her son, William H. Miller, and daughter, Hannah (Miller) Lemon.
