Robert F. Weishaupt, 81, of Kenmore, who, with his wife, Ferne, served as foster parent for more than 350 children, died Sunday (Feb. 9, 1997) in Kenmore Mercy Hospital in the Town of Tonawanda.

Born in Buffalo, he and the former Ferne Brocksopp were married in 1940. He worked at Curtiss-Wright Aircraft Corp. during World War II, then was employed for 32 years at E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., where he was a final inspector on the line that manufactured Corian counter tops. He retired in 1979

Honored several times through the years for their work with Child and Family Services of Erie County, the Weishaupts cared primarily for infants and preschool youngsters, as many as six at a time, from 1952 until 1990. During the 1980s, they handled mostly emergency cases involving youngsters needing protection and infants with special health needs.

"They are a perfect example of what we look for in foster parents," a Child and Family Services official said in 1985, when the Weishaupts were among three local families honored as "Great American Families" during National Family Week. The Weishaupts also helped provide support and information to assist other foster parents.

While his wife was the primary foster caregiver, Weishaupt filled a major supporting role. "He's the chief cook and bottle washer," she told an interviewer in 1987. "I couldn't do it without him."

The Weishaupts led a youth group at the former Elmwood United Presbyterian Church. They also enjoyed camping and breeding budgies and cockatiels. Weishaupt was a former president of the Buffalo Canary and Budgerigar Club.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Kenneth of Hamburg; two daughters, Nancy Babin of Mason, Mich., and Donna Primiano of the Town of Tonawanda; a brother, Richard of Clearwater, Fla.; 10 grand-children, 11 great-grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in C. Mertz & Son Funeral Home, 911 Englewood Ave., Town of Tonawanda. Interment in Acacia Park Cemetery.
