John Justus Jr. was the son of John Justus Sr. His mother's name is not known His name was spelled Justis in early documents.
He married Elizabeth Thomas in South Carolina before moving to what is now the Henderson County area of North Carolina.
John Justus Jr. served as a justice of the peace. In 1839, he was appointed a school committeeman for District 11, along with Capt. Robert Jones.
He was one of the first justices of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Session in the county. This would be equivalent to the Board of Commissioners today.
His first land purchased in today's Upward community was in 1825. His land eventually extended along what is today Howard Gap Loop Road, along both sides of today's Crest Road from Upward Road into today's East Flat Rock community.
