One item located on ancestry when researching this relative was a letter written to the mother from a sibling "Oscar" who too was in service, it was sent from Camp French on 27 Jan 1863 and he writes to his mother that Lewis had tried to get him transferred to his unit because he worried he might get sick, unfortunately Lewis died before that could occur. When a "Bill" went to look for Lewis he was told they took him to another hospital when in fact he had died at the first hospital he was taken to. Not sure who this Bill was.
ON Fold3 there is a document that reveals that Lewis was taken prisoner on Feb 8, 1862 by troops of General A.E. Burnside on Roanoke Island and released in Elizabeth City, NC on Feb 21, 1862.
A military document located on Fold3 states he died at a Raleigh Hospital on 25 Jan 1863.The letter from a brother had stated he thought he died the day after being taken to hospital. I tend to believe the military document is more accurate.
I noticed that no memorial had been added and it's very possible his stone was overlooked, missing, severely worn and/or damaged. With this transcription above it's most likely he is buried here with family.
