Kenneth R. Akins, age 77, of Benton, passed away Wednesday morning, February 18, 2015, at a local healthcare facility. Born in McMinn County to the late Brunner and Nola Pickens Akins, he had spent the majority of his life in Polk County where he was an avid supporter of Polk County athletics. He coached softball and was a longtime TSSAA softball umpire. He was also a well known chicken farmer and enjoyed driving a rafting bus on the Ocoee River after retirement.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant sister Thelma Akins; an infant brother, Charlie Akins; and brother, Mason “Mutt” Akins in January of 2015.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Barbara Akins of Benton; daughter, Julie Akins of Benton; brothers, Ed Akins, Thurman Akins and wife Margie, Gary Akins and wife Ann; and sisters, Geneieve Clabo and Maggie Crabtree. Several nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends also survive.

A memorial service will be conducted at 6p.m. Friday, February 20, 2015 from the chapel of Serenity Funeral Home with Sheriff Steve Ross officiating. The family will receive friends from 4-6p.m. Friday prior to the service.
