Johannes Marinius Olsen was born 4 Apr 1905 in Holmestrand, Norway, he emigrated from the port of Cruz Grande, Chile and Colon, Canal Zone on the SS Chilore arriving in the US at Baltimore, Maryland on 27 May 1931.

When he declared his intention for naturalization he lived at Caton's Island near Sanak Island Alaska. On his declaraton of intention he is described as a seaman, fair, brown eyes and hair, 5’10”, tattoo of a square rigged ship on his forearm. He was naturalized on 20 June 1938.

Johannes lived in Unga Village, Unga Island, Alaska for a number of years, he was a fisherman. While living there he served as a Sergeant in the Army during WWII.
