Ms. Bessie Haney Allen of Smyrna, GA passed away on Saturday, February 14, 2015.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 20, 2015 at 11:00 am at the Chapel of Carmichael Funeral Home in Smyrna. Gravesside services will follow at 2:00 P.M. at Shadowlawn Cemetery in Lawrenceville.

Bessie was born on March 8, 1917. She grew up in Lawrenceville, GA where she attended the local schools and Draughan’s Business College. She joined the US Department of Agriculture. Later, she transferred to the Veteran’s Administration and retired from the US Air Force Contracts Division as a civilian employee. After retirement, Bessie joined the Teem Clinic in Marietta.

She was faithful member of Smyrna First Baptists for over 50 years and was an inactive UDC and DAR member. For many years, Bessie and her husband operated Allen’s Antiques in Dacula and Smyrna.

Bessie was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph N. Allen; sister and brother-in-law, Nellie and Carl Burell, Sr.; her parents, Lovic P. and Claudine Pratt Haney.

She is survived by her sister, Jimmie Haney Gunter; nephews, Carl Burell, Jr. (Pat), Johnny Burell (Connie) and Andrew Burell; several great nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 4-6pm and on Friday from 9:30 until the funeral hour.

The family would like to extend gratitude to the staff at Cobb Wellstar Hospital for their compassionate and professional care during her illness and to Tranquility for their wonderful, caring service during her final days. Also a special thanks to the staff at Delmar Gardens who so lovingly cared for her during her last five years and gave her the title “Miss Sunshine.”

In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to Tranquility (Austell), First Baptist Church of Smyrna, or a charity of your choice.
