Charles was born to Ephraim and Phebe Johnson Butterfield. By the age of 7 his family moved to Waverly Township, Van Buren Co., MI.

Charles enlisted 12 Sep 1862 at Hartford Township, Van Buren for service in the Civil War. A member of
Company G, 19th Michigan Infantry, he was wounded in action at Thompson's Station, Tennessee 05 Mar 1863. He was discharged with the rank of Corporal 10 Jun 1865.

He married Delia "Dell" Chamberlin, the daughter of Chester and Olive Chamberlin, at Paw Paw, Van Buren County, Michigan 07 Jan 1868. And took up housekeeping in Waverly, Van Buren, MI.

They had seven children, Myrtle E. (Wheeler), Bertha, Mabel E. (Cleveland), Percy Chester, Claude Pernett, Verne Frederick and McFay Charles, all born Michigan except McFay. By his birth in 1879 they had moved to LeRoy, Mower, Minnesota. But, by 1900, they returned to South Haven Township in Van Buren and Dell's widowed father Chester was living with them.

1910 Charles and Dell were counted on the census at Manning, Kidder, North Dakota. But they may have only been visiting. Charles died in South Haven 1919 and Dell continued to live in Van Buren County until her death in 1940.
