John was at various times a stock dealer and farmer. He and his family moved from Baltimore, MD to Washington County, PA between 1818 and 1820 and then moved on to Summit County, OH in 1839, shortly after his daughter Mary and her husband Jacob Grable moved there. John had some business dealings with Jacob, and Jacob served as executor for John's estate. Most of John and Susannah's family also moved to Ohio around the same time, and the men mostly became potters there, as some excellent clay deposits had been discovered in the area. That was very likely the reason for the family's move from Pennsylvania.

The evidence for this being John's burial site is circumstantial, but very strong. The small gravestone in this location reads only, "Father." Every other grave in this plot is a Lee family member, and the grave immediately next to this stone is John Lee's son Josiah. It is very unlikely the "Father" stone refers to Josiah, as he has his own grave location and a fine marker, so it makes sense that John Lee is the one buried as "Father". Another bit of evidence is that John died right about when the cemetery was founded, and he's buried in Lot 1, Grave 1. The only puzzle is why John's wife Susannah was buried 3 lots away in the same row since she died long before Josiah. Greenwood Cemetery's records up to the early 1920's were all destroyed in a fire which happened at that time, so it is unlikely any records exist to answer any questions about many of the burials related to John.
