LeRoy "Pete" Bittenbender, chef at the Hazleton Elks Lodge for some 12 years, died at 8:40 o'clock last night at the State Hospital. He was 47. Mr. Bittenbender, who became ill Tuesday morning, was taken to the hospital in the Hazleton Community Ambulance at 8:45 a.m. yesterday. The deceased served as chef at the Elks lodge until last November. Prior to that, he was associated with his father, the late Harry Bittenbender, and his uncle, former Mayor Charles Bittenbender, in a grocery business on South Wyoming street.
Mr. Bittenbender resided with his sister, Mrs. Helen Bittenbender Stolz at 302 West Broad street. Also surviving are a brother, Walter, three nieces and one nephew. The deceased was a son of the late Harry and Jeanette (Wallace) Bittenbender and had resided his entire life in Hazleton. He was a member of Emmanuel's Reformed Church.
The funeral will be held from Bachman Brother Funeral Home at 3:00 p.m. Saturday with services in charge of Rev. Carl S. Leinbach. burial will be made in Mountain View Cemetery. Friends may call Friday afternoon and evening.
