Private Winslow W Corley was born in Wilson Co., Tennessee, moved with his family as a young man to Shelby Co., Texas in the 1850's, joined the Confederate States Army on 16 Sep 1861, and was killed in action during the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain while serving with Company F, 10th Regiment Texas Cavalry (Locke's). In the defence of Atlanta during Sherman's "March to the Sea", he was one of 10 soldiers from his unit cited in the Confederate Roll of Honor General Orders No. 64 dated 10 Aug 1864 for his heroism and service to his country.

His father was Col Edmund Thomas Corley and his mother was Clarkey Hainey Beasley. They are buried at the Texas Historic Corley-Harrison Cemetery in Shelby Co., Texas which Private Winslow W Corley claimed as his home.

He must have had a premonition of his death when just a couple of month before he was killed, on 10 Apr 1864, he sent the attached poem to his mother in Texas.

In 2016 a memorial marker was installed at the cemetery at his home in the Corley-Harrison Texas Historic Cemetery, Shelby Co., Texas by his nephew, George Braxton Harrison.
