Death Claims H.G. Conkwright, Civic Leader

Funeral services for H.G. Conkwright, prominent Hereford business man, rancher, and community leader, have been scheduled for 3 o'clock, Friday afternoon, April 20.

Mr. Conkwright died at 5:45 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at St. Anthony's hospital in Amarillo following a minor operation. His condition has been critical for the past 10 days, due to complications which resulted from the operations.

The death of Mr. Conkwright, known to his friends as "Gratz", is felt not only in Hereford and Deaf Smith County, but over the entire Panhandle. Although he never sought or accepted credit for his deeds, Mr. Conkwright was constantly working for the interests of his friends, his church and his community. While he seldom appeared in the limelight, he was responsible for hundreds of community and regional movements.

Born in Clark County, Kentucky on April 22, 1877, he moved to Hereford in May, 1907. On October 1, 1907, he returned to Winchester, Kentuckey, and married Miss Mary Lisle. They returned to Hereford and settled on the old A.J. Thompson ranch, fifteen miles northwest of here, to make their home. Mr. Conkwright started as a stock farmer and rancher on this place, which he still owned and operated at the time of his death, along with extensive other holdings which he has acquired. Several years ago, the Conkwrights moved to Herefod [sic] and later built their present home at Fifth and Lee Avenue.

In addition to his ranching activities, Mr. Conkwright became a director in the First State Bank Dec. 14, 1927, and today holds this position. He also served as president of the First State Bank from November 12, 1941 to June 19, 1944. He was elected County Commissioner in 1927 and served till 1930. He has also been active in school affairs serving on the school board for a number of yeas [sic]. In more recent years, he has been a director in the Hereford N.F.L.A.. and on the Deaf Smith Selective Service board, a position he held at the time of his death.

Probably no other person has contributed more to the First Baptist Church of this city than has Mr. Conkwright. He joined the church when he was a small boy and has been an active member since. For the past 20 years he has served as Deacon, and has been chairmen of the board since 1928. He was active in the state organization, "Texas Baptist Convention," and has been on the board of trustees of Buckner's Orphan Home for several years. For many years he has also been the teacher of a boy's Sunday School class in the Junior department.

An old friend of Mr. Conkwright summed up his character by saying: "Gratz Conkwright needs no eulogy; his life speaks for itself. He was successful in every way; in his business; as a husband and father; he was a true Christian. He lived, practiced and taught religion, keeping it with him in all of his dealings; he never did any man an intentional wrong. He gave freely of his time, energy and money to the betterment and improvement of his community."

Mr. Conkwright is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. J.R. Allison of Hereford and Mrs. Chas. Hays of Dimmitt. Also three brothers, Dr. P.J. Conkwright, pastor at Sapulpa, Okla., I. Milton Conkwright of Oklahoma City and J.C. Conkwright of Winchester, Ky.; a nephew, Colby Conkwright of Hereford.

Pallbearers will be A.O. Thompson, Matt Gililland, Cliff Acker, Allen Dawson, Geo. Brumley and Wirt Phillips.
