As a child, she participated in Brownies and Girl Scouts. In junior and senior high school she held several class officer positions. She served as Kamiah Barbeque Days Princess and was an honored recipient of Kamiah High School's Female Athlete of the Year award. She graduated from KHS on May 22, 1981.

After high school graduation, she attended the University of Idaho for two years and participated in the Vandal Marching Band, performing at several Seattle Seahawks games.

She transferred to New Mexico where she attended the Southwest Indian Poly Technical Institute, graduating in May of 1985 with a degree in computer technology.

She worked briefly in Salt Lake City in medical supplies and then moved to Bremerton, Wash., where she worked in Immigration and Naturalization. She then started her 17-year employment with the Social Security Administration. Employment took her to live in Seattle, Salt Lake City, and Spokane.

Cheryl enjoyed gardening, yard sales, and huckleberry picking and especially enjoyed helping her mother with flowers, her garden, and doing yard work with her father. She did volunteer work for several organizations and was an avid collector of teddy bears.
