STAMBAUGH, MICHIGAN CENTENNIAL,1882-1982: 100 YEARS ON THE HILL centennial book "Family Histories: Signe Jacobson Hill" page 61 (excerpt)
After she graduated, Signe Jacobson went to Detroit where she met and married William Hill. The couple came to Stambaugh for their honeymoon and never left.
Upon coming to Stambaugh, Bill first sold shrubbery, some of which is still growing in various front yards in town. After a short while he went to work in the mines, working for the M.A. Hanna Mining Company for 35 years until his retirement in 1962.
Bill was probably best known for his size - everyone called him "Shorty." Some people may remember Bill as the referee at the Stambaugh Red Wing hockey games.
Signe and Bill had five children: Ward, Arthur (died at two years of age), Alice, Marjorie (now Marge Hill Medovich) and Donald. All of the children were born in Stambaugh, graduated from the Stambaugh schools and all but Marge left home. There are now six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren in the clan.
On August 13, 1962, Signe Jacobson Hill died. Bill sold the house and moved. Although he's Canadian born and is now 81 years old, Bill frequently visits the area and still calls Stambaugh "home."
