Died 23rd October 2010
Rebecca Aylward (15) also known as Becca Oatley, was found dead on Sunday 24th October, in an area known as Pennsylvania Woods, near Bridgend in Wales. She had been battered to death and died of head injuries. She was a pupil at Archbishop McGrath Catholic high school in Tondu.
On 18th November 2010 she was buried at Maesteg Cemetery following a requiem mass at Our Lady and St Patrick’s Church, Maesteg.

In a statement made at the time of her death Rebecca’s family said:
“Rebecca, also known as Becca, was dearly loved by all her family. She was loved by everyone including all her aunts, uncles and cousins. She will be sadly missed, she was a very happy young girl, she had an outgoing and bubbly personality,
“She was very motherly towards her younger brother and sister who absolutely adored her – they have been left devastated by her death … As a family we are all devastated by her untimely death and wish to be left alone to deal with our grief in private. Becca can never ever be replaced.”
The last confirmed sighting of Rebecca was on Sarn Hill at around 12.30pm on October 23, when she was dropped off by relatives to visit a friend. She was reported missing by her mother Sonia Oatley in the evening when she failed to return home.

Rebecca Aylward was a fifteen year old from the Welsh town of Maesteg. In October 2010, the bright young woman was lured into the woods in Aberkenfig by her former boyfriend, Joshua Davies, and brutally murdered.

Rebecca's murder shocked her small Brigend county community, which was already reeling after a serious of youth suicides that had attracted national attention in the years before her death. The top student was popular amongst her friends and had already completed some GSCEs early, receiving A marks on some exams. She was expected to do well in further exams, but her bright future was cut short by Davies, who was charged with beating Rebecca to death with a rock. The young man, who was 16 at the time, left his ex-girlfriend to die in the forest.

During the trial, the court heard how Davis had bragged to his friends that he was going to kill her, with one young man telling Davis he would buy him breakfast if he went through with the killing. Despite denying the murder, Davis was convicted by a 10-2 majority verdict and was jailed for a minimum of 14 years in 2011.

The two teenagers had known each other for years and dated for three months a year prior to Rebecca's murder. Upon their breakup, each gave a different account of why the relationship ended. After this, Davis began to send text messages to his friends planning her murder. He admitted that he "sometimes" hated Rebecca, and judge Mr Justice Lloyd Jones said the young man was devious and calculating.

Rebecca's final day was Saturday 23 October 2010, when she and Davies agreed to meet in the woods. Rebecca wore new clothes, and her slight frame was discovered still in these clothes in the woods the next day. An alarm was raised when Rebecca failed to return home on the evening of October 23, resulting in a short-lived manhunt.

After the murder took place, Davies tried to construct an alibi for himself by posting messages on Facebook claiming to be entertaining with friends. When Rebecca's family reported on the missing teenager, he posted "I feel sorry for her mother," claiming he'd be worrying if he was in her shoes.

Davies tried to blame his friend for Rebecca's murder, but that was not enough to convince the jury. Psychiatric reports found no evidence of any mental conditions to explain the attack, and Davies had no reported history of violence. Rebecca's mother, Sonia Oatley, has since spoken out to say Davies deserves the death penalty. She has gone on to write a book about her daughter, entitled "Bye Mam, I Love You."Precious miss Becca was dearly loved by all her family. Cherished daughter of Sonia Otley, adored big sister of Jessica and Jack

She was a very happy young girl, she had an outgoing and bubbly personality. Becca loved going out with her friends, and enjoyed frequent shopping trips with her aunt. She had a wide circle of friends and was popular and well liked by all who knew her. She was very motherly towards her younger brother and sister who absolutely adored her.

Rebecca's life was cut tragically short after she disappeared on Saturday 26 October 2010 and was later found dead. She was murdered by her ex-boyfriend.
