Rosa died at 8 months of age, possibly of a communicable disease. Nine months later her brother August was born and he lived only six months. The third child, Jacob, lived to nine years of age. Charles and Katherine, born in 1875 and 1877, were the only two siblings who lived to adulthood. The last two children were both named Frank; one died at the age of two and the other at the age of 14.
The family eventually settled in Newton, Kansas where the parents died and were buried, as well as three of the four younger brothers who died before adulthood.
