The son of Jonathan & Elizabeth (Shussler) Dice, in 1860 he was a shoemaker's apprentice living with and/or working for shoemaker Emanuel Reisinger in Rye Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 7" tall and had dark hair and light eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in West Chester, Chester County, June 8, 1861, mustered into federal service at Washington DC, July 26 as a private with Co. H, 1st Pennsylvania Reserves (30th Pennsylvania Infantry), and honorably discharged with his company June 13, 1864. According to his obituary seen here, he was "the first volunteer from Fishing Creek Valley, Perry County" and "one of the four original members of the First Regiment, Pennsylvania Reserves, who came through the war unscathed," both unconfirmed claims.

After returning from the army, he married Mary Isabelle Ilgenfritz and fathered Minnie (b. @1865), Anna (b. @1867), Lyman Martin (b. 02/10/70), Maude E. (b. 10/06/72 - married John A. Beach), Walter Jonathan (b. 12/29/76), and Edna G. (b. 02/24/79 - married Rev. J. Fred Bingman). He turned to the ministry and served churches in various locations throughout Pennsylvania and Maryland. Some months prior to his death, he moved in with his son at Marysville, Perry County, where he died from "aortic stenosis & mitral regurgitation" with "senility" a contributing factor.
