Otto Vos was the fifth child, but first son born to John Vos and Bertha Pothoven Vos on December 12, 1917. Otto was born in Redlands, California, where the family lived for a time for the health of older sister, Gertrude. They returned to the Vos home on the farm near Peoria when he was six months old. That farm would become his home for many years. Otto attended Peoria Christian School. Otto often spoke fondly about his growing up years with his family, and in the last few years spoke of many early remembrances. Brother Clarence and Otto spent many enjoyable hours together as two youngest in the family. Until the day of Otto’s death, the brothers were in touch, caring so much for each other.

Otto married Ruth Deur in April of 1940. Four children were born to them: Stanley John, Melvin Arthur, Judith Ann, and Mary Lynn. They farmed the family farm until 1961, when they moved to Peoria. Otto began running a portable mill to grind feed on farmer’s yards along with his farming for a while. He then built Peoria Feed and Grain which served the needs of many farmers of the area. Otto was a loving husband and father and worked many long hour days and nights to keep his business and family going. Ruth died in September of 1970. She had suffered much from various ailments, but finally leukemia took her life. Otto took up various avenues of mission work with the Navigators for a time, including prison ministry.

In January of 1972, Otto married Judith (Judy) De Jong, who had been teaching in Peoria for some time. The four older children were all married and in their own homes by that time. One son, Jeremy Otto, was born to Otto and Judy. They continued work at Peoria Feed and Grain, Inc. Judy assisted with bookkeeping at the office. Otto worked in the area of sales and service and humbly held his customers in high regard. Even in his fading years, Otto would see every person he met as someone he had been blessed to do business with. At retirement, Otto was involved in many home improvement projects and managed the home and childcare tasks when Judy returned to her work in Christian education at Pella Christian. They were able to enjoy many great trips across the United States and Canada during Jeremy’s growing years and in later years. Otto and Judy celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary on Jan. 3, 2015.

Otto and Judy became involved in various ministries: they were directors of Southern Iowa Bible Camp for twelve years. They served for a summer in the Golden Gate Christian Reformed Church in San Francisco, CA. and worked with a summer Bible School/youth ministry in Dallas, Texas. They met with young adults of the Pella area for many years in their home and in church, sponsoring retreats and special activities. In 1984 they became the Regional Representatives for Christian Reformed World Missions,. They traveled for meetings and to Central America several times to meet missionaries on their field of work, fulfilling life long dreams of mission work for both travel and spreading God’s word. Otto was an active member of the Peoria Christian Reformed Church all of his life. He served in many capacities there in the council and in leadership of different study groups. He also blessed the area Christian community by serving on a number of boards such as Pella Christian High, Peoria Christian School, Christian Opportunity Center, and Liberty House. He was a long and active member of the Gideons. His love for his Lord and the Word was the testimony of his life.

The last few years of his life Otto struggled with many health issues. In February of 2014, he became a resident of the Cottages care facility. He remained cheerful and found so much joy in his Bible and many devotionals he read each day. His testimony was always strong despite difficult days and nights. Otto’s faith never wavered. In times of pain and distress he would often be singing or saying words of a song or a psalm.

“I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me..” was one of Otto’s favorite texts. He was strong in the Lord and strong physically for his lifetime. He resided at the Cottages from Feb. 3, 2014 until Feb. 3, 2015, when the Lord called him home.

Otto leaves behind his wife, Judy, five children, eighteen grandchildren, fifty one great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren.
