Parents Ole Gulbrandson Skiftinghaugen (1803-1886) and Ragna Tomasdtr Herreid (1805-1885) both died in Ettrick

Born in Hardanger, Norway
Married Thone Kittelson in Wisconsin
Parents of at least five children:

Nels Herreid, one of our earliest settlers and a prominent man in this community, met a sudden death about 4 p.m. last Monday. He was engaged in loading hay on a wagon in the field and when there was about half a load on, he accidentally fell backward to the ground striking on his head, and it is supposed his neck was broken by the fall, as he died almost instantly, without uttering a word. Deceased was about 70 years old.

He was the father of
1. Governor Charles Herreid of South Dakota;
2. Henry N. Herreid of Galesville, Chicago and Faniels, MT (1861-1922) married Martha Henderson (1863-1923) of Ettrick, they moved to MT and
Mesdames
3. Katherine Ragna, Mrs Sven Hendrick (Swenson) Dale
4. Helen Bergitte, Mrs Iver Hendrick Svendson (1866) and
5. Nellie, Mrs Thomas Thompson Odegard of this place.

The funeral will be held tomorrow.
