Ola recalled, "Papa wasn't a talker. Mama raised a garden, did the milking, house work, and helped in the fields and the fruit orchard. We walked to Belleville school with Uncle Jesse's sons Fines, Doc, and Bill. Doc took up for me, no one would dare touch me. Of course we got into lots of fights too." Ida's mother Grandma Black lived with them for several years.
A few years after Joe's wife Ida died, Joe went to California and lived with his daughters. When he died he was buried beside Ida.
