Victoria -- Joseph Hammerschmidt, 78, died Monday morning at St. Anthony Hospital.

A retired farmer, he had lived in the area all his life. He was born Feb. 7, 1900 in Herzog, Russia, the son of Leonard and Walburga Applehans Hammerschmidt.

He married Matilda Kuhn Jan. 30, 1934 in Victoria. He was a member of St. Fidelis Church, Victoria.

Survivors: His wife, at home; six sons, Ernest, Robert, Leon, William and Leo, all of Plainville, and Thomas, Hugoton; six daughters, Mrs. Loren (Alice) Arnold, Hutchinson, Mrs. Earl (Elaine) Sunley, Hays, Mrs. Alfred (Mary) Hammersmith, Ness City, Mrs. Ronald (Rose Ann) Heidel, Wichita, JoAnn, of the home, and Theresa, of Hays; three sisters, Mrs. Anna Kuhn and Mrs. Pauline Braun, Victoria, and Mrs. Regina Schumacher, Wichita; 35 grandchildren.

Services 10 a.m. Wednesday, St. Fidelis Church; St. Fidelis Cemetery. Parish wake service with Christian Mothers joining 8 p.m. Tuesday, Cline Mortuary. Friends may call after 7:30 p.m. Monday until time of service.
