BIG STONE GAP, Va. - Grover Lawson, 86, of the Wildcat Valley, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday (July 21, 2004) at Wellmont-Lonesome Pine Hospital.
He was a lifelong resident of Big Stone Gap. He was a retired coal miner with the Stonega Coke and Coal Company with 38 years service and a member of the U.M.W.A. District #28.
He was a charter member of the Robinette Chapel Church in Big Stone Gap.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Barnett and Sarah (Cobb) Lawson; brothers, Claude Lawson, Howard Lawson, James Willard Lawson and three infant brothers.
Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Ida Jane (Rhoton) Lawson; two daughters, Thelma Lester and husband, Delmar, Big Stone Gap and Betty Gilly and husband, Gilbert, of East Stone Gap; one son, Ronald Lawson and wife, Wanda, of Kingsport; seven grandchildren, Delmar Lawson, Jr., Katherine Hayes, Kevin Lawson, Barry Lawson, Duane Gilly, Dwight Gilly and Derek Gilly; seven great-grandchildren, Timothy Lester, Jesseca Lester, Sarai Lawson, Aaron Lawson, Shannan Gilly, Saylor Gilly and Evan Hayes; one sister, Ruby Osborne, Big Stone Gap; and special friends and neighbors, Ron and Ann Adams, Big Stone Gap.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Holding Funeral Home in Big Stone Gap.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Don Childress, Elder Allen Hensley and Barry Lawson officiating.
Music will be provided by Billy Howard Lawson and Patsy Hensley.
Committal services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Family and friends are requested to meet at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home to go in procession to cemetery.
