Cornelius Shearer, 72 of Williamsport is one of the oldest locomotive engineers in the state of Pennsylvania. In 1838 he left Philadelphia for Williamsport on a canal boat. On the same boat was the first locomotive that went here, the "Robert Ralston". This was in the summer and the engine could not be used until the fall of the same year on the first trip from Williamsport to Elmira. Wood was used as fuel, and while it was running Corny conceived using coal as fuel. The experiment was a compete success. Mr. Shearer went to Harrisburg and ran the first coal fed locomotive to Lancaster.
