He was born about 1828 as Friedrich Pohlmann in Germany, likely with as first or second given name Johann.

On 9 July 1852 Fried. Pohlmann (24 y, born in Germany, farmer) and his wife Charlotte Pohlmann (27, Germany, farmer) arrived on the ship Gesine, which departed from Bremen in the northwestern part of Germany, at the port of New York, Castle Garden.

In 1860 Fredk Pohlman (32 y, born in Germany), his wife Charlotte (36, Germany), their children Carrol (6, New York), Frederick (5, New York), Wm H (1, New York) and his father Jno F Pohlman (60, Germany) were living in the town of Coxsackie, located on the Hudson River, about 110 miles north of the city of New York, Greene County, in the western part of the State of New York.

In 1865 Frederick Pohlman (35), his wife Charlott (39), their children Carl M (11), John F (9), William H (5), Louisa (4), Amelia (2) and his father John F Pohlman (64) were still living in Coxsackie, Greene County, New York.

About 1867 the family Pohlman moved from Coxsackie, Greene County, New York to Clayton County in the northeastern part of Iowa.

Fred's and Charlotte's son Charles died in September 1867 and was buried in Farmersburg,Iowa. It's a very strong indication that the family lived then in or near Farmersburg. (burg is a typical German (and Dutch) ending of a place name, meaning city (but originally meaning castle, stronghold: around it (and in it) were houses built that became later on a city. Compare Hamburg, the second largest city of Germany, after Berlin).

In July 1870 Frederick Pohlman (41, born in Waldach [?], Germany, farmer), his wife Charlotte (46, Waldach [?], Germany), their children [John] Frederick (14, New York), William (12, New York), Louisa (9, New York), Amilia (7, New York), Carlotta (5, New York), Carl (2, Iowa) and his father John Pohlman (70, Waldach [?], Germany, farmer) were living in Mendon Township, Clayton County, in the northeastern part of Iowa, located on the Mississippi River.
Waldachtal (Waldach valley) is a town in the district of Freudenstadt in Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany.

On 15 February 1882 Frederick Pohlman's and Charlotte Williams' daughter Mary Louise Pohlman married in Mendon [Township], Clayton County, Iowa to Frederick W. Marpe, son of Louis Marpe and Caroline Jost. The married Mary Louisa Marpe, born in 1861 in New York, died on 19 April 1900 at the age of 39 years in Nunda Township, Freeborn County, at the southern border of Minnesota with Iowa.

In April 1885 Fred Pohlman (56, farmer), his wife Charlotte (60), their children William H (27, New York, farmer), Charlotte (19, New York) and Carl (17, Clayton County, Iowa) were living in the city of McGregor, Mendon Township, Clayton County, in the northeastern part of Iowa, located on the Mississippi River across from Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin.

On 4 January 1888 Frederick and Charlotte Pohlman's daughter Lottie Pohlmann married in Mc Gregor, Clayton County, Iowa to James Edward, son of John Edward and Ann Henderson.

On 1 May 1895 Fred Pohlman (66, Lutherian, farmer), his wife Charlotta (70, Lutherian), their son Carl Pohlman (27, Clayton County, Iowa, Lutherian, farmer), granddaughter (?) Lottie Pohlman (11, Clayton County, Iowa) and [daughter-in-law?] Nora Carrol (26, Clayton County, Iowa, Catholic, school teacher) were still living in Mendon Township, Clayton County, Iowa.

Frederick Pohlman died on 1 February 1899 at the age of 71 years in Clayton County, Iowa. On 8 October 1903 his wife Charlott Pohlman died in October 1903 at the age of 79 years in Mcgregor, Clayton County, Iowa.
