He was a general agent for Country Companies from 1940 to 1971, a real estate broker for 20 years, and had owned and operated Schillinger Christmas Tree Farm for the last 25 years. One of his trees was selected as grand champion at the Illinois State Fair in 1990.
He developed the Hickory Hills Subdivision in Viola.
He was a member of the Viola United Methodist Church choir and served on the parish board. He was a member of the Lions Club, Elks Club, Jay-cees, Methodist Men's Club, Viola Chamber of Commerce, named Viola Chamber of Commerce Champion Citizen in 1991; and served as a leader of Boy Scouts of America Explorer Post, Viola.

John is survived by his wife, Ruth Florence (Wiedenhoeft); a daughter, Jill Louise Schillinger of Viola; a son, Dr. Jack Arthur "John" Schillinger of Potomac, MD; three grandchildren; a brother, Lester Schillinger of Naperville; and many nieces and nephews.
