Melvin Cook, 72, of Degraff, passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2015 in OSU Medical Center surrounded by his family.
He was born July 2, 1942 in Champaign County. Melvin was a 1961 graduate of Rosewood High School. He was a farmer and was the Ohio claims supervisor for ADM Crop Insurance Company. Melvin enjoyed work trips, and also camping trips. He loved sitting on the porch talking with family and friends. He also enjoyed grilling for them. If you did not find Melvin on the porch, you could usually find him at the fairgrounds. After receiving the 4-H Boy of the Year Award at the Champaign County Fair in 1960, his dedication to that fair never died. Melvin was a 4-H advisor of Triple "S" Livestock Club for 46 years, a member of the fair board for 36 years, and served as the president of the fair board for 13 years. Melvin always fought for what was right; keeping the best interest of young 4-H members in mind. From this, grew a great respect for Melvin from so many. He was also on the Rosewood Fire Department, Westville Grain Board, a township trustee, and on the Farm Bureau Board. Melvin loved running the farm with his wife and family by his side. Melvin had a passion for many things, but most of all his family. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his childhood friend and wife of 50 years, Sue (Calland) Cook; 3 sons, Steve (Kara) Cook, Wayne (Debbie) Cook, and Phil (Tina) Cook; 6 grandchildren, Ray, Shelby, Emily, Ethan, Kady, and Wade; mother-in-law, Marjorie Calland. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Donald & Mildred (Baker) Cook; his brother, Donnie; and his father-in-law, Clem Calland.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2-7 p.m. on Sunday, February 1, 2015 in the VERNON FUNERAL HOME, Urbana. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday in the funeral home with Pastor Mark Atterholt officiating. Burial will follow in Rosedale Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be Ray Cook, Ethan Cook, Wade Cook, Paul Calland, Randy Leopard, Jay Underwood, Logan Rees, and Jimmy Prince. Honorary pallbearers will be Emily Cook, Shelby Cook, Kady Cook, Ashley Wagner, and Michala Faulkner.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Champaign County Fair, PO Box 38157, Urbana, OH 43078. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.vernonfh.com
