Nicolette Joleen Smith departed this life surrounded by family on January 23, 2015. A celebration of Nikki’s life will begin with a visitation at 9:30 with service at 10:30 at the First Baptist Church of Mandan on Thursday, January 29th. A visitation will also be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the church. Burial will be at 3:00 p.m. at the Leith Cemetery, Leith, ND with a social gathering following at the Lutheran church in Carson.

Nikki was born July 22, 1949, the daughter of Sebastian and Barbara (Schmitz) Babel. She was born in Bismarck and soon moved to Leith, N.D. Born at only 4 and ½ lbs., and without the use of her legs, Nikki began defying odds and overcoming challenges from her first breath and would continue proving her strength and determination through her last breath, 65 and a half years later. She graduated from the 8th grade in Leith and high school in Jamestown from the Anne Carlsen School in 1968. Nikki lived a full life that included raising four children which would lead to her greatest joy, her ten grandchildren and great granddaughter. Her favorite past time was driving, especially to her grandchildren’s various school events, sports, trail rides, parades, and to Fort Lincoln State Park. She enjoyed organizing family and church gatherings.

Nikki had more abilities than disabilities which allowed her to become a true advocate for helping people overcome what most perceived as limitations. A few examples included working with DCIL, Bismarck Mandan Handicapped Association, Easter Seals, Enable, Brighten’s Thrift Store, and the Bismarck Police Department. Nikki was also instrumental in the founding of a governor’s committee for independent living. “We have a lot of work to do,” were familiar words to those who spent time with Nikki.

Keeping her in their fondest memories are her son, Demetrius (Kara) Metz and their three children, Alex, Dillon and Ellie of Brunswick, Georgia; her daughters Consuela (Mike) Triepke and son Garrett of Bismarck, Priscilla (Jason) Sauer and daughters: Jocelynn (Kenny) Mees and great granddaughter Sophia; Krystal, Tiffany and Denyka of Bismarck; Angela Metz and sons Jason and Jordan of Mandan; brothers Robert (Kelly) Babel, Rocky (Tammy) Babel, Marty (Jean) Babel and sister Jen (Charlie) Wirtz; Aunts Vivian Usher and Evelyn Eisenbarth and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and very special friend Millie.

She was reunited in Heaven with her husband, Joseph Smith, parents Barbara Babel and Sebastian Babel.
